Emission Classification of Building Materials

Katu 4

The aim of the classification is to enhance the development and use of low-emitting building materials

Various chemicals are emitted from building and interior decoration materials into indoor air. The classification presents emission requirements for the building materials, fixture and furniture with and without padding or textile coverings used in ordinary work spaces and residences with respect to good indoor air quality. M1 stands for low emissions.

Cleanliness Classification of Air-handling Components

M1 label for air-handling components

The Cleanliness Classification of Air-handling Components is part of Classification of Indoor Environment 2008, which is intended to be used in the design and construction of healthier and more comfortable buildings and their mechanical systems. The objective of the Cleanliness Classification of air-handling Components is to ensure the good quality of the supply air flowing through a new air-handling system. M1 classification of air-handling components is operated by The Building Information Foundation RTS sr. It is a voluntary system open to all manufacturers, importers and exporters of air-handling components and systems.

Cleanliness Classification of Air-handling Components is based on general and component-group-specific requirements. The general requirements for a classified component are:

  • a classified component shall not increase the concentration of contaminants that are detrimental to health or comfort in the air handling system or supply air
  • a classified component shall not produce odours, or gaseous or particulate contaminants that decrease the quality of supply air
  • a classified component shall be easy to clean
